Laura Muntz Lyall

Laura Adeline Muntz, better known as Laura Muntz Lyall ( born June 18, 1860 in Radford Semele, Warwickshire, † December 9, 1930 in Toronto, Ontario) was a Canadian painter of Impressionism.

Life

Laura Muntz Lyall was born in England, but her family emigrated in 1865 to Ontario, Canada, from. She grew up on a farm in the Muskoka District Municipality.

Your first drawing lessons Laura Muntz Lyall received by a local painter who advised her strongly to continue his studies in Paris. Through a private scholarship she had the opportunity to study there at the free Académie Colarossi art. Here they came into contact with Impressionism. Upon her return to Canada she opened a studio in Toronto and became an Associate of the Royal College of Art ( ARCA ).

Muntz Lyall was the first female artist in Canada, which also got recognition outside Canada. In 1893 she exhibited some of her works at the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago and in 1894 the Société des Artistes Français in Paris. After the death of her sister, she interrupted her career to raise their eleven children. It was only in 1921, she devoted herself fully to painting again. Laura Muntz Lyall died at the age of 69 years and her remains were interred in the cemetery Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto.
