Laura (Queensland)

Laura is a city in the north of Queensland, Australia. This part of the state is also known as Far North Queensland.

Geography

The place is located in the area of ​​Cape York Peninsula. The city of Cairns is located about 300 kilometers south-east and the Lakefield National Park is directly connected to the north.

History

Aborigines lived for 50,000 years in the region. The researchers Archibald Macmillan discovered the Laura River in 1873 and named it after the name of his wife. The village got its name. Nearby, in the Palmer River gold was found and built a railway line from Cooktown to Laura and to the Palmer River Goldfields, which was completed in 1888. However, since the gold discoveries were not very productive, the rail link was set again soon.

Today Laura is especially known for its prehistoric paintings of the Aborigines on the rock faces around. There live 225 people in the place.
