Lavazza

Luigi Lavazza SpA is an Italian coffee refiner and distributor of coffee beans and flour based in Turin (Northern Italy). Founder was Luigi Lavazza (1859-1949), who first roasted coffee in a small retail store and sold. His grandson, Emilio ( † 16 February 2010) developed the company into one of the big coffee companies in Italy. Today, Lavazza is known primarily for espresso coffee and exported throughout Europe.

Lavazza SpA is still in its fourth generation of family ownership. Lavazza has begun in recent years with the opening of its own coffeehouses primarily in major Italian cities and motorway service areas and is now occasionally also to Germany. The company employs about 2,000 people worldwide and generated 2008 revenue of 1.1216 billion euros.

Criticism

In June 2010, the German Coffee Association Hamburg was accused by the Federal Cartel Office to have promoted a cartel of coffee company with a press release in February 2005, which is why a fine of up to € 90,000 was imposed. Among the participating coffee roasters included, in addition Lavazza company Kraft Foods Away from home service (Bremen), Tchibo (Hamburg), Seeberger (Ulm), Segafredo Zanetti Germany (Munich), Gebr Westhoff (Bremen), Melitta System Service ( Minden ), and Darboven (Hamburg). The latter two companies, the fines were reduced because of her cooperation in the investigation of the allegations.
