Lavra

Lavra or Lavra (Cyrillic: Лавра ), the Arabic-speaking Laura (originally from Greek Λαύρα " alley " or " corridor " ) is in Orthodox monasticism an " alley ", a hermit colony, the monks indeed secreted live in each other as a hermit but the liturgy celebrate together, and also a common Abt ( Abbas ) are located. The origins of this eremitic form of life lie in early Christian Egypt in the 4th century. There the hermit settlements are in the Sketischen desert as its nucleus. Later this name was taken over by other Orthodox monasteries such as the Monastery " Great Lavra " on Mount Athos: Monastery Megistis Lavra ( Μονή Μεγίστης Λαύρας ). Assuming the name was transferred as an honorary title to important monasteries of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Few monasteries in today's Russia and the Ukraine carry the honorary title of Lavra:

• The Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius northeast of Moscow
• The Alexander Nevsky Monastery in Saint Petersburg
• The Kiev-Pechersk Lavra
• The Holy Ascension Monastery of Pochaiv in the Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine
• The Holy Ascension Monastery of Sviatohirsk ( Свято - Успенська Святогорська Лавра ) in the Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine since 2004
