Lawrence Pennell

Lawrence T. Pennell PC QC ( born March 11, 1915 in Brantford, Ontario; † 9 August 2008) was a Canadian lawyer and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada, who was for some years a Member of the House of Commons and Minister. He was most recently 1968-1985 Justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario ( Supreme Court of Ontario ) and at the same time from 1971 to 1977 Chancellor of McMaster University.

Life

After visiting the Smithville High School and two years of work for the steel company Dofasco Pennell holds a degree in Political Science and Economics at McMaster University. After its completion he began in 1938 to study law at Osgoode Hall Law School of York University, from which he graduated with a Doctor of Laws ( LL.D. ). He then took up a career as a lawyer and did during the Second World War, his military service in the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he was promoted to captain last (Flight Lieutenant).

In the general election of June 18, 1962, he was first elected as a candidate of the Liberal Party as a delegate in the House of Commons and represented there until his mandate waiver of May 1968, the constituency of Brent Haldimand.

Early in his career, he was initially deputies from May to December 1963 Vice - Chairman of the Standing House of Commons Committee on Privileges and Elections, which he chaired between 18 February 1964 and 3 April 1965. At the same time he was 18 February 1964 to April 3, 1965 Chairman of the Standing House Committee on Banking and Commercial and took over at the same time between 30 June 1964 and 6 July 1965, the first government office as Parliamentary Secretary at the Treasury before he beyond 5 April served as Chairman of the Standing House of Commons Committee on Finance, trade and Economic Affairs until September 8, 1965.

On July 7, 1965 Pennell was by Prime Minister Lester Pearson as Solicitor General appointed to the 19th Canadian Cabinet and held this post until the end of Pearson's term of office on 19 April 1968. At the same time it was July 7, 1965 to September 30, 1966 Minister without Portfolio.

After retiring from the Government and the House of Commons in 1968 Supreme Court of Ontario ( Supreme Court of Ontario), where he worked until 1985. At the same time he held from 1971 to 1977, the Office of the Chancellor of McMaster University.
