Lazăr Edeleanu

Lazar Edeleanu ( born September 1, 1861 in Bucharest, † April 7, 1941 ) was a Romanian chemist.

Life and work

Edeleanu came from a Jewish family. He received his doctorate from 1883 to 1887 at the University of Berlin under August Wilhelm von Hofmann with a thesis on the first synthesis of amphetamine, which succeeded on January 18, 1887. Since the psychotropic activity of amphetamine was only discovered in the 1920s, was paid to this Fund initially not pay much attention.

Quick importance, however, gained more discoveries, like its sulfur dioxide extraction process, which " General Society of Chemical Industry " laid the foundation for the 1910 founded by Edeleanu. In 1930 the company was due to the increasing awareness of the name " Edeleanu " renamed Edeleanu GmbH. In 1937 the company was bought by the German Petroleum AG, then changed hands several times and was finally bought in 2002 by ThyssenKrupp Uhde GmbH to the exclusion of the Leipzig company part. Within the company, it now represents the range refinery technology. Up to the present time the core business has remained the desulfurization and refining. The Leipzig company part was with the loss of the name Edeleanu as EDL plant mbH to Pörner Group in Vienna.
