Leandro Alberti

Leandro Alberti, Alberto, Albertus, Leander, dominicanus bononiensis (* 1479 in Bologna, † probably 1552 ) was an Italian Dominican and historian.

Life

In his early youth Alberti caught the attention of the Bolognese rhetorician Giovanni Garzoni, who volunteered to serve him as a tutor. He joined in 1493 in the Dominican Order, and after finishing his philosophical and theological studies, he was invited by his friend Francesco Silvestro in Rome. He served as his secretary and companion to Ferrari's death in 1528. 1517 he published six books in a treatise on famous men of his order. This work has been translated through innumerable editions in many modern languages. In addition to numerous saints ' biographies, some of which Papebroch recorded in the Acta Sanctorum, and a history of the Madonna di San Luca, he published (Bologna, 1514, 1543), a chronicle of his birthplace ( Istoria di Bologna, etc.. ) To 1273rd It was Lucio Caccianemici to 1279 continued.

The fame of Alberti is mainly based on his Descrizione d' Italia (Bologna, 1550 ), a book in which many valuable topographical and archaeological observations are found. However, many of heraldic and historical facts are useless since Alberti followed the uncritical work of Annius of Viterbo. The work was translated into Latin in 1567, after it had been expanded three times in Italian.

He also wrote a chronicle from 1499 to 1552 and sketches of famous Venetians. His explanations of the prophecies of Abbot Joachim and his treatise on the origins of the Venetian Republic show the power of historical criticism of his day. He was a close friend of most contemporary writers, who frequently consulted him. He often praised the letters of the poet Giovanni Antonio Flaminio, who dedicated the tenth book of his poems to the monk. Hardly anyone had a better knowledge of the content of most European libraries as Alberti.
