Geography

Geographical Location

Lędziny is located 16 km south of Katowice and 7 km north of the county town Bieruń. The city has a surface area of 31.04 km ². 61 % of its territory is used for agriculture, 15 % is covered by forest.

The city is divided into eight administrative areas: Hołdunów (Anhalt), Świniowy, Ratusz, Smardzowice, Zamoście, Blych, Gorki and Goławiec.

Neighboring towns

To the north is Mysłowice. East of Lędziny is Imielin. Southeast is Chelm Slaski. In the south is Bieruń and a little further to the west is Tychy.

History

The first written mention of Lędziny dates from the twelfth century. The village consisted of two parts, which belonged to a Benedictine monastery in Staniatki and the other belonged to the Principality Racibórz. 1555, the two parts of the village together. In 1742 it became part of Prussia. In the first half of the nineteenth century, coal mining began in Lędziny. 1922 belonged Lędziny then back to Poland. During the Second World War, there were in the city several labor camps, which were subject to the Auschwitz concentration camp. On 27 January 1945 the German occupation ended in Lędziny.

In November 1945, Lędziny seat of the municipality Lędziny, this stock from Lędziny, Hołdunów and Smardzowice. 1951, the community was renamed Hołdunów. 1966 Lędziny received its town charter.
