The flax - in the upper reaches also Seebach and then Leinbach, formerly called Gartach - is a left tributary of the Neckar. It rises west of Kleingartach and empties into Neckargartach from the west into the Neckar. According to the old name Gartach the medieval Gartachgau was named.

Geography

Course

The flax rises near Kleingartach from multiple sources in the southern Hartwald, which then unite to form the first Seebach, who becomes the Leinbach and Lein later. From here on, the waters first also attracts forest to the northeast, left only initially accompanied by hard wood, right from longer on its crest usually bearing Heuchelberg. Almost from the beginning are on the south-facing slopes on both sides and in the smaller valleys of vineyards. Having Kleingartach and Niederhofen through, it returns to near Stetten am Heuchelberg to the east. Here also the Kraichgaubahn from Epping occurs in the west to the Mulde. Below Schwaigern opens from the left with the almost 8 km long Massenbach the first of the two more significant inflows. Below the coalesced districts Schluchtern and Großgartach Leingarten leaves the track on the other side of the valley that here bends to the northwest. After the flax is excreted onto the territory of the city of Heilbronn and the approximately 10-km Rotbach flows in Franconia Brook in turn from left to. Soon after, the Lein cut the Neckargartach place where it discharges from the left in the north -flowing river Neckar.

Towns

So the water is running on the boundaries of the cities Epping and Schwaigern, the municipality Leingarten and the city of Heilbronn. In the catchment area lying north of the river yet Massenbachhausen, Massenbach and Kirchhausen to feeds.

The flax stems approximately 293 m above sea level. NN and ends after a run of less than 27 km in length at an elevation of about 151 m above sea level. NN; so it has a only small average bed slope with little more than 5 ‰.

Catchment area

This clearly left-leaning catchment area of 118.9 km ² includes flax, of which about two-thirds left the waters are run and only one-third right. The watershed runs right in the south very long on the crest of the right proximal Heuchelberg and is hardly ever just 2.5 km away from the barrel, while extending the catchment area on the other side far to the north; the northern watershed runs in a Nordausbuchtung around the upper Massenbach and Rotbach long in about 6.5 km distance from the watercourse.

All the competitors just beyond the watershed also run to the river Neckar. From the mouth in the far east in Neckargartach starting the vagina first runs west-southwest on a small piece to the short Böckinger Wolf digging further then the vagina rises on the crest of Heuchelberg, first turn competes on a short stretch of the Nordheimer Katzentalbach beyond that. Even before the Eichbühl where the boundary turns to the southwest, the Zaber collects many tributaries that run down to the south side of Heuchelberg. Your catchment area surrounded even south a bit the top Lein and thrusts in the area of southwestern Hart forest to which the north to the lower Neckar draining Elsenz, the north of the hard woods with her right tributaries beset the flax on the west and north-west, especially in the section. North of Massenbachhausen bends the waters divide on top Massenbach then east, from here the Böllinger creek running initially very close to east of the Neckar like themselves, until it wins even more space to the right of its course at the expense of flax after the headwaters of the Rotbachs. Shortly before the opening to the east, a very small area in between shifts without above-ground drainage.

Landscape

The largest part of the catchment area is farmland, while grassland is scarcely mentioned. Links are at its edge on the upper reaches, much of the hard forest in the catchment area, in the middle reaches of the wooded hillside and then right ridge of Heuchelberges. Some smaller compact forest areas, inter alia, pocket forest south of Kirchhausen that Stöckach and Bruchtalwald to Massenbachhausen around, lie in the Nordausbuchtung the catchment area at the upper ground Bach and Rotbach. There are quite large settlements.

History

Remains from the early Stone Age in Leintal rare, whereas the discoveries of Großgart Acher culture of colonization in the late Stone Age announce. In the Early Bronze Age the Leintal seems like it can be concluded from the low number Fund to have been settled only very small, whereas again available from the following periods from the Middle Bronze Age finds numerous. The older still exist today in places Leintal go back to the time of the Frankish conquest. Old early medieval fortifications were the Harchenburg at Schluchtern, the Franks ski jump at Großgartach and on the castle hump between Stetten and Neipperg. The flax was called at that time Gartach. The surrounding region was the Gartachgau, and also the place names Kleingartach ( once only Gartach ) Großgartach (now a district of Leingarten ) and Neckargartach refer to the river and the Gau. At the time of the Carolingian some expansion settlements arose in Leintal, including Niederhofen. In the high Middle Ages, the Leintal was under the influence of the diocese of Worms and the Hohenstaufen. After the fall of the Hohenstaufen and the strengthening of regional principalities which places in the hands of various men came, among other things, presumably derived from the nobility as Leintal Lords of Neipperg and other Mr. Enge Worse from near and far, mostly from the later knights Canton Kraichgau. Since the Leintal was not in the center of a larger territory, but in many respects to more than one diocese borders or boundaries emerging territorial states like Württemberg and the Palatinate excluded, there was no uniform development along the body of water, but were the places rather often target different expansion efforts. The mediatization of principalities in 1805, the Leintal finally came to Württemberg, with the exception of Schluchtern (now part of Leingarten ), which came as former Electoral Palatinate place at Baden Baden and thus an exclave formed in Württemberg before 1945/47 also to Württemberg came. Today, the Leintal lies within the western district of Heilbronn in or underflow in Franconia Brook and Neckargartach within the denunciation of the city of Heilbronn.

Economy

The flax has no significance as a transportation route, as it is not very wide and not deep enough. The feeds are verdolt in the villages partially. In the 19th century, was located between Neckargartach and Frankenbach the Widmann'sche paper machinery factory, a pioneering operation in the production of the first paper machine in Germany, who won the required water power from the flax.

Flood protection

The purpose of association flood protection Leintal built a total of 14 flood retention basins, of which 8 are already completed. Another four built in municipal director flood retention basins were handed over to the association end. The purpose of association was founded by the local Epping, Heilbronn, Leingarten, Massenbachhausen and Schwaigern in 1998 after the catchment of the flax increasingly frequent floods had caused immense damage in the local documents. By November 2011, the purpose association invested 18.7 million euros in flood protection.
