Leizhou Peninsula

Geographical location

The Leizhou Peninsula (Chinese雷州 半岛/雷州 半岛, Pinyin Leizhou Bàndǎo ) is a peninsula in south-western part of Guangdong province in southern China. It is one of the three major Chinese peninsulas. Its extension in north-south direction is about 140 km in east-west direction about 70 km. To the east of it lies the South China Sea ( Nan Hai ), west of the Gulf of Tonkin ( Beibu Wan ) and to the south the 30 kilometers road Haina ( Qiongzhou Haixia ), which separates it from the island province of Hainan. The largest city is Zhanjiang湛江. There are the railway lines Litang - Zhanjiang ( Li Zhan Tielu黎湛 铁路) and Zhanjiang Hai'an port (see Yue Hai Tielu粤海 铁路).

On the peninsula there are 76 volcanoes, most of which are extinct.
