Lenin Peak

Lenin Peak (Russian Пик Ленина, Pik Lenina; Tajik Қуллаи Ленин, Qullai Lenin, originally called " Mount Kaufmann ", " spades merchant " or "merchant - tip " ) is the highest mountain in the Transalai chain in the northern part of the Pamirs (Central Asia ). With 7134 m, it is behind the spades Ismoil Somoni (formerly " Pik Stalin " or " Communism Peak ", 7495 m) the second highest peak of the Pamir. History

The mountain was in 1871 by the Russian researcher Alexei Pavlovich Fedchenko "discovered" and after the then Governor General of Russian Turkestan Konstantin Petrovich (from) Kaufmann (Russian Kaufman ) Pik Kaufmann (spades Kaufmana ) named.

On July 25, 1928, the first ascent of the south side was carried out by Karl Vienna, Eugen Allwein and Erwin Schneider ( " Schneider 7000 " ) as part of a German -Soviet expedition led by Willi Rickmers Rickmers, Nikolai Gorbunov and Krylenko.

In the same year, the mountain was renamed after the leader of the October Revolution, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin Peak Lenin.

There are 16 routes to the summit, nine on the south side and seven on the north side. Since some routes are not technically complicated, the mountain is very popular and well attended in the summer.

The mountain is one of five lying on the territory of the former USSR seven thousand meters peaks. The snow leopard Medal is awarded to the climbers who have conquered all five summits.
