Leo Ascher

Leo Ascher ( born August 17, 1880 in Vienna, † February 25, 1942 in New York) was an Austrian composer and lawyer.

Life

Leo Ascher, son of an umbrella factory, studied piano at the Conservatory of Music in Vienna at Hugo Reinhold and Louis Thern, composition with Robert Fuchs and Franz Schmidt. He also studied law and received his doctorate in 1904 at the University of Vienna to the Doctor of Laws. Bless His first operetta ' s God was premiered in 1905. From 1905 to 1932 he composed about 30 operettas.

1909/1910 Ash was musical director of the Cabaret Fledermaus together with Béla Laszky. In the 1920s, Ascher folk songs and film music began to write. After he was arrested in the Kristallnacht, emigrated after his release before the end of 1938, France and England to New York, where he lived with his wife and daughter as a lawyer for copyright issues since 1939. Although his works were also listed under the Nazis, he received no royalties. So he lived in his last years in poverty. He has written in this time patriotic songs and teaching literature for children.

He is the father of the writer Franzi Ascher.

His artistic estate is kept in Leo Ascher Centre of Operetta Music in the Millersville University of Pennsylvania. Letters, pictures, manuscripts and printed music are there worked well.
