Leobinus

The hl. Leobinus of Chartres, also Lubinus (French Saint Lubin ) (* at Poitiers, † March 14 557 in Chartres ) is a saint of the Catholic Church, who is venerated especially in France. He was from 544 until his death in 557 Bishop of Chartres. His feast day is 14 March.

Legend

The hl. Leobinus was probably born at the end of the 5th century on a farm near Poitiers. As he tended the cattle of his parents, one day he met a monk. This he asked him to write down the letters of the alphabet, so that he could teach reading. Since nothing else was available, the monk wrote the letters on the belt of the studious boys ( see figure, bottom right medallion ). To his further instruction Leobinus came to a monastery near Poitiers, perhaps in the Abbey of Saint -Martin de Ligugé. After spending several years as a hermit, put it, the bishop of Chartres a Aetherius as abbot of the monastery of Brou. After the death of Aetherius in the year 544 the Frankish king Childebert I. Leobinus appointed as Bishop of Chartres. 549 took Leobinus the 5th Council of Orléans and 552 part of the second council of Paris.

Relics

Leobinus was buried in the church of Saint- Martin du Val in the area of Chartres. The churches of Paris Saint- Séverin and Saint -Paul -Saint -Louis have relics of saints. In the Church of Saint -Nicolas in Blois his head is kept.

Representation

A relief at the south portal of the cathedral of Chartres from the 1st half of the 13th century represents the hl. Leobinus at the deathbed of St. Kaletrik and is on a glass window are shown scenes from his life.

In the Church of Saint- Lubin in Mazangé in the department of Loir -et -Cher Leobinus is displayed on a wall painting.
