Léon Comerre

Léon- François Comerre ( born October 10, 1850 in Trélon, Nord-Pas -de- Calais, France, † 1916 in Le Vésinet ) was a French academic painter of symbolism. He was the uncle of Albert Gleizes.

Comerre studied art in Lille and at the École des Beaux -Arts in Paris. The painter Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889) introduced him to the Orientalism. Comerres looked at the portrait painting, portraits of Odalisken as well as mythological and historical scenes, as in thematic style to a glorified Symbolism and the Pre-Raphaelites.

Between 1874-75 he had exhibitions at the Paris Salon. In 1875 he won the Prix de Rome for his painting L' Annonce aux bergers. In the following years he lived in London, where he exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts. He was also represented at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts in Glasgow.
