Leon Yao Liang

Leon Yao Liang (* 1923 in Guanghui, Zhangbei; † 30 December 2009 Xiwanzi, Chongli) was a Roman Catholic priest of the underground church and auxiliary bishop in the diocese Xiwanzi in the Chinese province of Hebei.

Life

Leon Yao Liang received in 1946 the ordination of Roman Catholic Church. He worked as a parish priest in various parishes. In the founding years of the People's Republic of China from 1949 he had to severely limit state due to pressure his pastoral activity; later he was merely a survival as a vegetable farmer and wood seller. In 1956, he was interned in a labor camp and sentenced to life in prison because of his religious beliefs and opposition to the denial of his Romtreue 1958. It was not until 1984 he was released, his pastoral activities, however, strict limits were set.

He was appointed by Pope John Paul II auxiliary bishop in the diocese Siwantze , a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Suiyuan, in Hebei Province in 2002. A consent by state Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association stood out since 2002. He was also asked as Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Andrew Hao Jinli to the side since 2002.

In 2006 he was regularly restricted in the exercise of his episcopal ministry. For his initiative for the abolition of torture, he was sentenced in 2006 to further two and a half years in prison.
