Leonard E. Baum

Leonard E. Baum ( born 1931 ) is an American mathematician. He was a pioneer in Hidden Markov Models (HMM ).

Tree graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor's degree in 1953 and his doctorate in 1958 ( Derivations in commutative semi -simple Banach algebras ). His pioneering work on HMM were made in the late 1960s when he was at the Institute for Defense Analyses. They stood in the context of research on automatic speech recognition. According to him, and Lloyd R. Welch of the Baum-Welch algorithm for HMM is addressed in this context.

He later worked for hedge funds on Wall Street as a financial mathematician, among other things, for Monemetrics ( a precursor of Renaissance Technologies ), whereas it 1977, the founder James Simons had brought, who had worked also on the IDA ( at code cracking in the context of the Vietnam War ) and knew him from there. He turned there, among other things HMM.
