Leonard Huxley (writer)

Leonard Huxley ( born December 11, 1860 in London, † May 3, 1933 in Hampstead, London ) was a British teacher, author and publisher.

Life and work

Leonard Huxley was the second son of Thomas Henry Huxley and his wife Henrietta Ann. He has taught at the University College School, the University of St Andrews and at Balliol College and received his degree in 1883 Literae Humaniores. In 1884 he began teaching as an instructor at Charterhouse School. 1900, written by him was published biography about his father in the Macmillan publishing house. 1901 Huxley took his work to the publisher Smith, Elder & Co.. There he assisted Reginald John Smith (1857-1916) on the publication of the Cornhill Magazine. After the death of his friend Smith and adoption by the publisher John Murray Huxley became the sole editor of the Cornhill Magazine. Two years later appeared his biography about Joseph Dalton Hooker and 1920 his poetry collection Anniversaries.

On April 16, 1885, he married Julia Frances Arnold ( 1862-1908 ), a daughter of Thomas Arnold ( 1823-1900 ). With her he had four children: Julian Huxley, Noel Trevenen Huxley (1889-1914), Aldous Huxley and Margaret Arnold Huxley ( 1899-1981 ). After the death of his first wife Huxley married on February 23, 1912 Rosalind Bruce. From this marriage two sons, David Bruce Huxley (1915-1992) and Andrew Huxley come.
