Leonardo I. Tocco

Leonardo I Tocco (c. 1310/15, † 1375/76 or 1377 ) from the Italian family Tocco was from 1357 bis 1375/76 Count Palatine of Cephalonia.

Life

Leonardo Tocco was born around 1310/15, the son of Guglielmo Tocco, the Governor of Corfu and his second wife Margherita Orsini, daughter of John Orsini, Count Palatine of Cephalonia. Since Leonardo's mother was heiress of ½ Zakynthos, this had a right thus to the Count Palatine dignity.

Leonardo Tocco was an important figure in the Kingdom of Naples. He succeeded in 1352 to free the prisoner in Hungary held Robert of Taranto by skilful negotiations. Robert of Taranto, who had previously ruled personally about the County Palatine, Leonardo then appointed in 1357 to the Count Palatine of Cephalonia, Ithaca and Zante Lord of.

1361 ( or shortly before ) married Leonardo Maddalena de Buondelmonte, the sister of Esau de Buondelmonte, the despot of Epirus. Through this connection, the Tocco family later gained also the rule in Epirus.

1362 Leonardo conquered the island of Santa Maura ( Leucas ) and the fortress Vonitsa on the Greek mainland. In 1374 he was one of the envoys who traveled to Naples to offer Johanna of Naples, the crown of the Principality of Achaia.

In 1375 or 1376 Leonardo Tocco I. died, and was succeeded by his son Carlo I. Tocco.
