Leon urine is a natural alkaloid which occurs in various species of the plant genus of Leonotis ( Leonotis ). Chemically, leonurine ester of an aromatic carboxylic acid, specifically a syringic acid ester.

Occurrence

Various species of the genera lion's tail or preparations thereof are traditionally used as herbal medicines, such as to " strengthen " the womb, menstrual pain, and nervous heart complaints. When two effective alkaloids which leonurine and stachydrine were found. With the help of modern analysis it was shown that leonurine probably occurs in the herb of Leonuris japonicus, however, not in Leonuris cardiaca or Leonotis leonurus.

Synthesis

Because of its pharmacological activity, a way to technical representation of Leon urine was developed. Instead of the expensive extraction from plants may be obtained by reaction of 4- guanidino -1-butanol with syringic acid and dicyclohexylcarbodiimide today.

Pharmacological action

Scientifically proven now is that leonurine has effects on heart activity since it inhibits creatine kinase. In addition, an increase in tone of the uterine muscle in vivo and in vitro could be demonstrated in experiments with rats. Was able to assert itself as an active pharmaceutical ingredient leonurine not.
