Leopold Gegenbauer

Bernhard Leopold Gegenbauer ( born February 2, 1849 in Asperhofen, Lower Austria, † June 3, 1903 in Gießhübl, Lower Austria ) was an Austrian mathematician.

Leopold Gegenbauer studied at the universities of Vienna and Berlin. In 1875 he was appointed extraordinary professor at the newly founded University of Chernivtsi. In 1878 he moved to a professorship at the University of Innsbruck, in 1893 he became professor at the University of Vienna.

Gegenbauer is known for important work in the field of number theory, algebra, integration theory and function theory.

According to him, the Gegenbauer polynomials are named.

And so the Gegenbauer rho functions Ρ and ρ ( large and small rho), which are defined as follows.

In 1973 in Vienna Floridsdorf ( 21st district ) of Gegenbauerweg was named after him.
