Leopold Kaufmann

Leopold Ernst Kaufmann (also Kauffmann, born March 13, 1821 in Bonn, † February 27, 1898 ibid ) was from 1851 to 1875 Mayor of Bonn.

Life

He was the son of the official Franz Wilhelm August Nepomuk merchant and his wife Maria Josefine Maximiliane of Pelzer. One of his brothers was Alexander Kaufmann.

He came from a distinguished Bonner family, whose ancestors had held important offices in the city and in the Electorate of Cologne. As a child he was given music lessons by Johanna Kinkel and worked within their music wreath with. During his studies, he became in 1843 a member of the fraternity Fridericia Bonn. After completing a law degree at Bonn University, he first worked as a government employee in Konstanz. This was followed by a time as District Administrator and Acting Mayor in Koblenz. Later, he was District President of Zell on the Mosel and was elected in October 1850 as Mayor of Bonn. He took office in May 1851. In 1859 he received the title of Lord Mayor. He held until 1875 The Office. He showed a great deal initiative to beautify the city. To him the restoration of the Rhine front with construction of the Rhine promenade goes back. He obtained in 1859 for the city a theater and abolished the post of salaried music director. He arranged for the construction of sewers and the paving of roads. He has rendered to the restoration of the Bonn Minster special merits.

He was a member of the Prussian House of Lords and the author of several art historical writings.

His grave is in the old cemetery in Bonn. Since 1902, the merchant street is named after him in the district Endenich.
