Leopold Müller (painter)

Leopold Carl Müller, called Egypt -Müller, also Orient -Müller ( born December 9, 1834 in Dresden, † August 4, 1892 in Weidlingau, now Vienna) was an Austrian painter and draftsman. He was the most important Austrian Orientalist painters.

Life

Müller, whose father was a lithographer in Vienna, received his education at the Academy of Fine Arts. His teachers included the painter Karl von Blaas and Christian Ruben. His works represented mainly landscapes, this, he traveled among others Hungary ( 1861-62 ) and Italy (1857, 1870-72 Venice, Sicily 1872-73 ), where he and his friend, the painter Augustus of Pettenkofen had shared a studio in Venice. 1862-67 he worked as a draftsman at the magazine Figaro. In Paris he began, inspired by the work of Eugène Fromentin interested in the oriental genre.

Since 1873, Müller was staying often in Egypt. Caught by the magic of colors and the utterly otherness of the Orient, Müller created primarily representations of public life, but also light-flooded landscape studies and city views. To 1886 was followed by another eight more months of travel, some with Hans Makart in the country. The impressions he worked in his works, which were representations of Oriental life and the landscape since that time.

The Winter 1875 1876 he spent with Carl Rudolf Huber, Franz Lenbachplatz and Hans Makart in Cairo, where they had set up a studio at the disposal of Viceroy. Here he met the Prince of Wales know. During his time as a professor at the Vienna Academy - since 1878 - took Müller continued journeys to Egypt. One of his students was Rudolf Swoboda. 1890-91 Müller was rector of the Academy. His most famous work is the " market in Cairo" from 1878, which is now exhibited in the Austrian Gallery of the 19th and 20th century in the Upper Belvedere in Vienna.

1893 Leopold Carl Müller received together with August von Pettenkofen a grave of honor in Vienna's Central Cemetery (Group 14 A, number 29 ), which was designed by Viktor Tilgner. 1894, the Leopold -Müller in Vienna was named in his honor, but renamed in 1955 in Stoesslgasse.

The two portrait painters in Marie Müller ( * July 10, 1847 in Vienna, † March 21 1935 in Vienna) and Bertha Mathilde Müller ( born October 28, 1848 in Vienna, † 26 January 1937 in Vienna) were his sisters.
