Leopoldov

Leopoldov ( until 1948 slovak " Městečko "; German Leopold Nove Mesto or Leopoldstadt; Hungarian Újvároska ) is a town in the district Hlohovec away in the west of Slovakia in the lower Považie between the cities of Trnava and Piestany, about 60 km northeast of the capital Bratislava.

History

The city was built in 1664-1669 as one designed against the Turkish threat fortress at the request of Leopold I ( hence the name), and received city rights in 1669. Since 1855, the fortress Leopoldov serves as a prison and has remained mainly from the period after 1948 in memory. After 1882 the town was Leopold ( Leopoldstadt also German, Hungarian since 1873 Lipótvár ) incorporated.
