Les Essarts, Vendée
Les Essarts is a predominantly rural town with 5123 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) and an area of 56.24 km ². It is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of Les Essarts in the arrondissement of La Roche- sur -Yon in the département of Vendée.
Historical sights are a crypt from the 12th century, the Château Dessessart and the Roman entrance of the old church of St -Pierre d' Dessessart.
At the site of the present castle was built of wood in the 9th century a fortress, which was then expanded in the 12th century in stone. In the 15th century the gate area was renewed and reinforced with watchtowers. Nearby is a tumulus from the Gallo- Roman period.
