Les Veys

Les Veys is a commune with 389 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Manche in Basse-Normandie region. It belongs administratively to the arrondissement of Saint- Lô, and the Canton of Carentan and is a member of the Association of Municipalities Communauté de communes de la Baie du Cotentin.

Geography

The community is located about 25 km north of Saint- Lô, on the Cotentin peninsula, on the border to the neighboring department of Calvados and the landscape Bessin. It borders to the north with the Bay of Veys, which is itself part of the larger Baie de Seine, on the English Channel. Neighboring municipalities are:

  • Osmanville in the northeast ( Dep. Calvados )
  • Isigny -sur -Mer in the south east ( Dep. Calvados )
  • Mont Martin -en- Graignes in the south
  • Saint- Pellerin in the southwest,
  • Catz in the west and
  • Brévands in the northwest.

The main town of Les Veys is called L' Église and is located in a central location, about four kilometers from the coast. The municipality is located in the Regional Natural Park Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin. There is also the Park Administration ( Maison du parc ).

The northern part of the municipality consists of numerous polders. On the eastern municipal boundary of the river Vire, in the south of Bach Ruisseau du Moulin Poisson runs. In addition, the municipality is crossed by the river Flet.

Toponymy

Les Veys is derived from the Latin vadum (English ford Fr. Gué nrm. Vé ).

History

In 1837, Beuzeville- sur -le- Vey and Auville -sur -le- Vey were merged. Les Veys is located between the beaches of Utah Beach and Omaha Beach, where during the Second World War took place, the Allied invasion of troops.
