Isigny-sur-Mer
Isigny -sur -Mer is a commune with 2798 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011), which is located in the Basse -Normandie Calvados region. The inhabitants call themselves Isignais.
Geography
The community is located about 25 km north of Saint- Lô, in the Regional Natural Park Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin, on the border to the neighboring department of Manche, in the Baie des Veys. Neighbouring communities are:
- Osmanville in the Northeast,
- Monfréville in the east,
- Vouilly in the southeast,
- Neuilly- la -Forêt in the south,
- Mont Martin -en- Graignes ( Dep. Manche) in the southwest and
- Les Veys ( Dep. Manche) in the northwest.
On the western boundary of the municipality, the river runs Vire, on the northern his right tributary of Aure. The two meet each other just north-west of the village and strive as channelized flow to the English Channel. Isigny -sur -Mer, in contrast to its name no direct land share of coastline. Only the channel- developed mouth of the Vire allows a connection with the sea.
Toponymy
History
The story Isignys was marked by the development of the dairy industry in the early 19th century. The port played a major role: wood from the north was introduced, butter was performed, as well as coal from mining to Le Molay - Littry. In addition, the fishing was until the late 1970s, very important.
Isigny -sur -Mer was destroyed during the Second World War, more than 60 % ( 8 June 1944). The community was between the American landing beaches of Utah Beach and Omaha Beach.
In 1924 Isigny was renamed officially in Isigny -sur -Mer due to its proximity to the sea.

- The Town Hall is housed in a castle dating from the 18th century, in the Louis XVI style.

Economy
Isigny -sur -Mer is known for its dairy products, which are protected by the AOC mark Isigny -Sainte -Mere. The so-called Caramels d' Isigny are very well known.
Since the 20th century, oysters are cultured in the bay of Les Veys.
