Lester Luborsky

Lester Bernard Luborsky ( born May 15, 1920 in Philadelphia, † October 22, 2009 same place ) was an American psychologist, psychoanalyst and psychotherapy researchers. He is considered one of the pioneers of empirical psychotherapy research.

Life

As a child of Eastern European immigrants ( Meyer and Celia Luborsky ) he was born in Philadelphia (USA) and grew up there. His study psychology and Duke University, he graduated with the degree of PhD. He worked for two years at the University of Illinois. After that, he was a member of over eleven years the Menninger Foundation in order to then transfer to the Faculty of the University of Pennsylvania. From 1973 to 1974, Luborsky President of the Society for Psychotherapy Research.

The Äquivalenzparadox or "Dodo Bird Verdict "

In a much-cited review article on hundreds of comparative treatment studies, he came to the conclusion that psychotherapy is generally effective, but no differences between the various schools or types of psychotherapy are to be found. Following Rosenzweig (1936 ) he used a quote from Alice in Wonderland, in which the Dodo selects after a race no winner, but decides: Everyone has won and all must have prizes. This article, which is considered a classic of psychotherapy research literature, led to a decade-long controversy about whether individual forms of treatment proven to be more effective than others.

CCRT Core Conflictual Relationship Theme

The research method of the Core Conflictual Relationship Theme ( CCRT ) was a paradigmatic development to formalize and operationalize psychodynamic, clinical approaches. He demonstrated the fact that psychodynamic and psychoanalytic concepts also derived from clinical observation, scientific inquiry are available. This evidence was relevant to the rejection of doubts about the scientific Untersuchbarkeit psychodynamic concepts.

Therapeutic Alliance

The therapeutic alliance between patient and psychotherapist (also called therapeutic working relationship ) is considered as a basis for a successful psychotherapy. Lester Luborsky was one of the first to operationalized this construct, that is designed research instruments for its measurement and documentation and validated.
