Levi L. Conant

Levi Leonard Conant ( March 3, 1857 in Littleton, Massachusetts, † October 11, 1916 in Worcester, Massachusetts ) was an American mathematician.

Life

Conant studied mathematics at Dartmouth College ( Hanover ) and reached there in 1879 with a BA. Upon reaching his MA In 1887 he moved to the Syracuse University (Syracuse ), where he received his doctorate in 1893.

That same year, Conant accepted an appointment as professor of mathematics at the Dakota School of Mines (Rapid City). 1890 moved to the Clark University ( Worcester ), and a year later he went to the Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

In 1894 he married Laura Chamberlain. When his wife died in 1911, he married after the obligatory mourning 1912, his second wife Emma B. Fisher.

Levi L. Conant died on October 11, 1916 during a traffic accident. In his will, he left the American Mathematical Society (AMS ) an amount of $ 10,000, in 1976 - was paid out - after the death of Conant's second wife. With this heritage, the AMS praises since 2000 from the Levi L. Conant Prize -.
