Libellula is a dragonfly genus of the subfamily Libellulinae. You belong, for example, also bodied chaser ( Libellula depressa ), the insect of the year 2001. The genus was established in 1758 by Linnaeus.

In cladistics, the genus Libellula is compared with the genus Orthetrum within the Libellulinae all other genera of this subfamily. For the subfamilies of sailing dragonflies there is currently no study that allows a dichotomous representation of the phylogeny, the Libellulinae can be according to current research that is not clearly a different subfamily as a sister group to face.
