Libellula cyanea

Libellula cyanea is a species of the genus Libellula Dragonfly of the subfamily Libellulinae. Its distribution area covers the eastern United States from Maine to Texas.

Construction of Imago

The animal reaches a length of 40-48 millimeters, 29-34 millimeters which attributable to the abdomen. The front of the thorax, and has a brown -white to yellowish strip in the middle. The pages are bright and are each divided by a dark stripe. The hind wings reach a length 31-37 mm and are transparent. The pterostigma is two-tone brown and white. In females and just hatched animals the wing tips and the front part of the wings are amber. The legs are brown at the base and black at the end. The relatively broad and short abdomen in females and young males pale yellow with dark stripes in the middle and on the side. In the males, the abdomen and the abdomen attachments with the aging process turns light blue.

Construction of the larva

The larvae possess centrally in the face seated eyes and have a long, tapered abdomen towards the end. The edge of the unpaired front part of the labium, called prementum is smooth.

Similar Species

Libellula cyanea L. comanche looks similar, the pterostigma is, however, a solid color. Also L. comanche is larger and has a white face. And flavida L. and L. incesta have only solid Pterostigmata.
