Lien Chan

Lien Chan (Chinese连战, Pinyin Lian Zhan ) ( born August 27, 1936 in Xi'an, Republic of China, today: People's Republic of China ) is a Chinese national politician of the Kuomintang.

Life

Lien Zhan was born in mainland China, but has family roots in Tainan Taiwan.

Lien was from 1993 to 1997 and Prime Minister from 1996 to 2000 Vice- President of the Republic of China on Taiwan under President Lee Teng- hui. In 2000, he joined himself to the presidential election and achieved this with 23% of votes in third place behind only Chen Shui -bian of the DPP and the independent candidate James Soong. As a result, he was Chairman of the Kuomintang Party, which nominated him again for 2004 presidential candidates. In alliance with James Soong as a candidate for the vice presidency, he defeated incumbent Chen Shui -bian extremely scarce with 49.89 % of votes.

April 26, 2005 Lien broke the head of a 70 - member delegation to an eight -day visit to the People's Republic of China, where he met among others, President Hu Jintao. The aim of the visit was to improve relations between the opposition Kuomintang in Taiwan at that time and the leadership of the People's Republic of China. Later more visits Liens followed in mainland China.

On July 16, 2005 Lien has been superseded by later President Ma Ying- jeou as chairman of the Kuomintang. Then, the party appointed him honorary chairman.

On 9 December 2010 Lien should be awarded the Confucius Peace Prize. This he was to receive for his commitment to reconciliation between China and Taiwan. However, Lien was not personally present at the award ceremony. His office stated that they had not been officially informed about the price. The Confucius Peace Prize was first awarded. The Chinese government indicates that the 1.3 billion Chinese people " a greater voice in matters of world peace " should be bestowed with the award of this new price. From the vast number of Western countries, the price is deemed to be a "protest price", which was founded in protest at the award ceremony of the Nobel Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo.
