Lieuwe Steiger

Lieuwe Steiger ( born April 15 1924 in Haarlem, † October 17th 2006 in Eindhoven ) was a Dutch football player. The goalie stood for 16 years in the Dutch squad Ehrendivisionärs PSV Eindhoven, with whom he 1950 KNVB Beker - and it won the Dutch championship in. Between 1953 and 1954, he played seven matches in the jersey of the Dutch national football team.

Career

At the age of five years Steiger came to Eindhoven, where his father had found a job with the light bulb manufacturer Philips. At twelve, he joined the youth team of PSV Eindhoven. Even then he stood in the gate, where he developed his extraordinary talent. Even as a 18 -year-old in 1942 he managed the leap into the first team and he succeeded goalkeeper Leo Boumans. In Steiger's performance also in charge of the Dutch Football Association KNVB were attentive and appointed him to the regional selection of the Southern Netherlands.

In his club PSV Steiger was one of the supporting pillars of the team. In 16 years, he played 383 games for the club, so all the players of the club lies in the eternal ranking on rank 5. In 1950, he took with his team for the first time in club history the KNVB Cup and celebrated the following year by winning the Dutch Championship the biggest success of his career. He stood in the first Dutch team at the European Champions Cup took part in 1955.

Only much later, after eleven years in the goal of PSV, Steiger was appointed to the Dutch national football team. His first international game, he completed on September 27, 1953 against Norway. His time in the Orange jersey was however frustrating. In seven missions he conceded 21 goals and the end of 1954 was eventually replaced by Frans de Munck.

1957 ended Steiger at the age of 33 years his active career to pursue his professional career. After two years without practice, he returned as a substitute for the injured Pim Bekkering again in the gate of PSV back, but was injured after four inserts Thereafter he played no more games.
