Ligier Richier

Richier (* 1500 in Saint- Mihiel, † 1567 in Geneva) was a French sculptor of the early Renaissance. Richier came from a sammielloiser Steinmetz family. He was trained among others in Italy Michelangelo. His works can be found mainly in his native Lorraine. In this he was primarily involved with religious themes.

Richier was expelled because of his protestant confession of Saint- Mihiel.

Since about 1990, many of his works were thoroughly restored in Lorraine and the "Route Richier ", which leads to the important works Richier established by the Meuse.

Le Transi

Richier most famous Opus is " Le Monument de cœur de René de Chalon ," usually called " Le Transi " or " Le Squelette " in the Church of Saint- Étienne of Bar -le- Duc. It shows the body of René of Chalon, Prince of Orange; he was killed in 1544, aged 25 years in a fight. Three years later instructed his widow, Anna of Lorraine, daughter of Anton II of Lorraine, Richier represent the body of Rene's.

The Lorraine artist showed the deceased with his heart in his hand, as if he wanted to indulge it. The significance of this representation is not fully known. Certainly can be seen in the superiority of the soul over the body and a moment of repentance, the man places his life before God.

The Incredible aesthetically realism of the representation of the skinned corpus suggests that Richier possessed a thorough knowledge of anatomy.
