Lijnden

Lijnden is a village in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer in the Dutch province of North Holland. The village is named after one of the three pumping stations, keep the Haarlemmermeer dry: Gemaal De Lynden. In 2008 the village had 914 inhabitants.

Geography

The place is located in the northeast of the municipality of Haarlemmermeer. South of the town runs the A9 motorway, south lies the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. In the northwest, the A5 motorway crosses the A9, past the place. In the east, begin the suburbs of Amsterdam.

History

In the Middle Ages were in the region of several lakes that have coalesced around 1500 due to the peat and poor levees and the Haarlemmermeer, the then largest lake in the Netherlands, formed. 1836 had driven the water up to the gates of Amsterdam and Leiden two violent storms.
