Lionhead Studios

Lionhead Studios is a UK-based gaming software company, headed by the famous designer Peter Molyneux was. Lionhead Studios heard since April 2006 Microsoft Corporation and is an external first-party developers of the company.

History of the company

The Lionhead Studios were founded in 1997 by Peter Molyneux, after he had sold the development studio Bullfrog Productions also founded by him at Electronic Arts, and leave a little later. Assist in the establishment was Mark Webley, a good friend and colleague Molyneux 'whose hamster was also the namesake of Lionhead Studios.

The first game of the new company was Black & White, a so-called gods simulation with elements of artificial life, strategy, and beat ' em up games. Black & White in 2001 was distributed internationally by Electronic Arts. For the maintenance and continuation of the Black & White franchise an internal developer division called Black & White Studios was set up his own, which, however, was now dissolved.

Creature Isle: In Black & White publishing a plugin named Black and White followed. The next release of Lionhead was the popular and controversial role-playing game Fable, which, however, was not developed by Lionhead itself, but from the satellite studio Big Blue Box. Finally, in 2005 published The Movies and Black & White 2 and their extensions The Movies - Stunts & Effects, and Black & White 2 - Battle of the Gods. 2008, the successor to the RPG Fable, Fable 2 was released exclusively for the Xbox 360

Corporate Structure

Lionhead Studios had built at the beginning of a network of third-party developers, including the Intrepid Games and Black & White Studios included, among others, Big Blue Box Studios. Both Intrepid games as well as Black & White Studios have now been abandoned. Big Blue Box, however, was more integrated into Lionhead Studios as the parent company.

Lionhead was a private company until October 2004 and was taken over by financial constraints, by Microsoft in April 2006. Nevertheless, Lionhead Studios is regarded as a largely independent operating division of Microsoft Studios, regarding financial management.
