Lippitsch, Upper Sorbian Lipic, is a village in the northeast of the Saxon administrative district of Bautzen. It belongs to Upper Lusatia and was independent until 1977. Until 1999 it belonged to Milkel, from then to Radibor. The place is an official Sorbian settlement area and has 188 inhabitants.

The village name comes from the Sorbian word for lipa ' lime tree '. Lipic accordingly means " Lindenort ".

Location

The town is located on the southwestern edge of the Biosphere Reserve Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape, which occupies nearly a third of the natural region Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond area, which forms a part of nature region Saxon- Niederlausitzer Heathland the southeastern foothills of the Greater Region North German Lowlands.

On the northern and eastern edge of the village the little spree which also feeds the ten lakes in the northern area flows. North of Lippitsch start Driewitz - Milkeler Gentiles, with about 20 square kilometers, one of the largest unpopulated woodlands of Lausitz.

The nearby towns are Wessel in the east, and Milkel Teicha to the southeast, the southwest and Oppitz Hermsdorf / Spree in the northwest.

History

The first written mention of the village took place on June 15, 1353 as Lyppitcz. The place is but probably much older, which is supported by archaeological finds at a road between Lippitsch and Oppitz in 1838. In addition, a Bronze Age burial ground was found on a hill in the northwest. The finds are exhibited in the Museum in Bautzen. Between Lippitsch and Wessel also include the remains of an old water castle.

In 1528 ponds in the vicinity of the place are mentioned for the first time. The intensive cultivation was expanded from the manor Lippitsch. The economic situation at that time was relatively good, so Lippitsch had an oil and flour mill and a free inn.

1856 the manor was purchased by Curt Heinrich Ernst von Einsiedel on Milkel and combined with his goods. In 1900 it was converted the farmhouse.

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia Arnost Muka determined in the eighties of the 19th century had a total population of 219 inhabitants; which were 206 Sorbs ( 94%) and 13 German.

Until 1977 the town was an independent municipality, after which he was one of Milkel. Since 1999 he has been part of the community Radibor. On 1 April 2011 street names were given for the first time. The county road 7214 connects Wessel, Lippitsch and Oppitz.
