The list of Assyrian kings lists in chronological order the names of the kings of the Assyrian empire and their reigns. The spelling of some names varies in part considerably. In some publications, the names are separated or co-written. The notation itself is different. So is sometimes written " ä " or "Sh ". For Assur alone there are four different spellings: Ashur - Ashur - Ashur - Aschschur.

The individual parts of the name are separated by hyphens, the name of God is written large. The spelling Š / š is spoken as a Sch, the S like a normal page names that have come to be fixed with a different pronunciation, are mentioned in the " comment ".

Main source of the Assyrian kings, their sequence and reigns, is the Assyrian King List. It is valid until the time of Ashur -dan I as reliable as it is also supported by the Eponymenlisten which enumerates the eponymous officials for each year of reign. For the duration before Ashur -dan I. the information in the sources partially disassembled. The synchronistic king list Assyrian and Babylonian juxtaposes kings, but it is considered unreliable because the rulers are simply placed one after the other, without paying attention to real simultaneity. The dates listed always call the first year of reign, which need not be identical to the throne takeover year. After Mesopotamian tradition was officially sworn in at the start of the New Year celebrations. The death of the old king was attributed in full to the old rulers as long as the death did not occur in the last two months before the New Year celebrations and the swearing was therefore carried out in the same year.
