List of communities in Alberta#Improvement districts

In an Improvement District is a special district municipality in Alberta. These special administrative units may be formed by the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, pursuant to § 581 of the Municipal Government Act, the proposal and recommendation of the competent minister.

These districts are usually areas with special requirements, which arise from the fact that it normally is national park or provincial park areas. These special management units are managed by the Ministry of Alberta Municipal Affairs. Residents of districts elect their representatives in accordance with this authority. In Alberta, there are currently (as of July 2012) eight Improvement Districts. To better distinguish the districts the designation of the park were therein with numbers usually still attached, for the ID 349 There is no name. The next higher administrative unit in the Alberta Census Division.

Improvement District 04 ( Waterton )

The district is located in the south of the province. Its boundaries are consistent with those of Waterton Lakes National Park. Located just south of Calgary, near the border with the United States.

Improvement District 09 ( Banff )

The district is located in the southwest of the province. Its boundaries are consistent with those of Banff National Park. However, it does not include the town of Banff. The district is crossed by the southern section of the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1). In the northeast of the Improvement District 12 follows, in the southwest of the Kananaskis Improvement District.

Improvement District 12 (Jasper)

The district is located in the southwest of the province. Its boundaries are consistent with those of Jasper National Park. However, it does not include the town of Jasper. The district is in east-west direction from the northern section of the Trans-Canada Highway, the Yellowhead Highway through it,. From the south, Highway 93 terminates in the district. In the southwest of the Improvement District 09 closes at, in the north of Improvement District 25

Improvement District 13 ( Elk Iceland )

The district is located west of Edmonton. Its boundaries are the same as those of the Elk Iceland National Park. To the south of the district runs east -west direction of the Yellowhead Highway (Highway 16).

Improvement District 24 ( Wood Buffalo )

The district lies to the east of the province. Its boundaries are consistent with those of Wood Buffalo National Park.

Improvement District 25 ( Willmore Wilderness)

The district is called sometimes Improvement District 25 ( Willmore Wilderness) and is located in the northeast of the province. Its boundaries are the same as those of the Willmore Wilderness Park.

Improvement District 349

This district was formed as the last, on 1 January 2012. It includes lying in the Alberta portion of the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range, located in the east of the province.

Kananaskis Improvement District

The district includes most of the Kananaskis Country, located in the southwest of the province.
