1354 County of Luxembourg Emperor Charles IV is elevated to a duchy. First Duke Wenceslas I will. With the death of Emperor Sigismund died in 1437, the main line of the House of Luxembourg, which ends the supremacy in the empire. In the year 1441 the last Duchess sold out of the house Luxembourg the country to the French House of Burgundy. There remained but constitutionally a fief of the empire. After the death of the last Duke of Burgundy Charles the Bold in 1477 Luxembourg came with the Burgundian inheritance to Charles' daughter Mary of Burgundy and her husband, the future Emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg.
