List of Soviet and Russian submarine classes
This list focuses exclusively on Russian / Soviet submarine classes. Hence see also List of submarine classes.
Submarines of the Russian Navy ( Soviet Navy) were developed as numbered " projects " that are not always given a unique (class) name. Through NATO, the classes were during the Cold War based on intelligence information identifiers, which not corresponded with the original project name.
Most Russian ( and Soviet ) submarines had no names, but were only identified by an identifier. This identification was preceded by (prefix ) letter, which defined the type of boat:
All these prefixes were a С (S ) obtained at the end ( standing for специальная (special well ), meaning " designed for special missions ").
