Berlin has a high concentration of scientific and research institutions. Most facilities are concentrated at sites in Adlershof, Book, Charlottenburg, Dahlem and center.

In the city to study at four universities, four art schools, seven colleges and 23 state-recognized private universities 144,000 students, about 15 percent of whom come from abroad. Nearly 45,000 people are employed at the Berlin universities. (As of December 2011)
