List of World Heritage Sites in Sweden

The Swedish world heritage consists of protected natural areas and cultural monuments. Since 1967, they are under the protection of UNESCO.

Sweden and the World Heritage Convention

Sweden has signed the World Heritage Convention in 1984 and ratified on 22 January of the following year. 1985 began the kingdom antiquarian offices of the Nordic countries to compile a list of suitable properties in their territories.

In Sweden, the Kingdom of antiquarian Office has the primary responsibility for the implementation of the principles of the World Heritage Convention. It is also responsible for the care of cultural heritage sites. The national nature conservation authority ( Naturvårdsverket ) stands for the preservation of natural heritage sites. Organize these authorities and continue to fund the patterns, which are sent every six years to UNESCO.

On behalf of the Government of the said authorities oversee the nomination process for new World Heritage Sites. A working group of specialists in their field is formed. In addition, the provincial administrations of the provinces are responsible for the nomination. After completion of the documents they are forwarded to the government, which then makes the final decision nomination. After that, the files go to UNESCO.

1991 saw the appointment of the first object to the Swedish World Heritage - Drottningholm Palace on the island Lovön in Stockholm. Since then, the number of Swedish heritage sites has grown to 15.
