Little big-eared bat

Micronycteris megalotis is a bat species from the family of leaf lobes ( Phyllostomidae ) which is native to Central and South America. The Greek generic name Micronycteris means " little bat ", the Latin species name megalotis refers to the large ears.

Description

Micronycteris megalotis is a small bat with large ears and a short pointed nose leaf, which is typical of the family of the sheet tabs. The coat is brown, with the base of about 10 mm long hair is white. The thumb is long and embedded halfway into the flight skin. The wings themselves are relatively short and wide, which makes this type into a flexible flyer. The legs are long and slender with a relatively long Kalkar, which supports the clamping of the tail wing membrane. The tail is short and extends only to the tip of the tail wing membrane. Way of life

Micronycteris megalotis is widespread and occurs in different habitats. The style is like most bats nocturnal and feeds on insects and other arthropods. It is rarely managed to get flying prey, but the arthropods collected from the leaf surface. It is known that Micronycteris megalotis may take even poisonous butterflies of the genus Parides from the family of Ritterfalter to himself. In Costa Rica, the food is the end of the rainy season and 70% during the dry season to 30% of beetles. Butterflies represent up to 40 % of the diet. Distribution and habitat

Micronycteris megalotis comes from Colombia to Brazil and northern Argentina before. The IUCN estimates the way thanks to their wide distribution and occurrence in protected areas as an unthreatened.
