Littlemill distillery

Littlemill Distillery was a distillery for whiskey in Bowling, West Dunbartonshire Scotland. Individual surviving building of the distillery are sorted in the Scottish lists of monuments in the B category.

History

The distillery was built on the site of a former brewery from the 14th century between Glasgow and Dumbarton. Littlemill itself was founded in 1772, making it probably the oldest distillery in Scotland. The first deeds date from the year 1817. Distillery was by Hector Henderson, who in 1846 founded Caol Ila, helped to build. An all-round renovation took place in 1875 under William Hay instead. Then there were countless changes of ownership. 1988 ended up Littlemill at Gibson International, the style laid the distillery in 1992. When they went bankrupt in 1994, the distillery came along with Glen Scotia Glen Catrine Bonded Warehouse, but the production was not resumed. 1996, the plant was dismantled in parts. The license is located in the Littlemill Distillery Co.. On September 4, 2004 large parts of the distillery were irreparably destroyed by fire. The remains were crashing down in May 2006.

Production

The water belonging to the region came from the Lowlands distillery Auchentorlie Burn in the Kilpatrick Hills, which already belong to the Highlands. The system consisted of a five tonne capacity mash tun, a fermenting vat, and a wash still, each 25,000 liters. The spirit still took 18,000 liters. Both stills were fired with steam. The annual production was 800,000 liters. Between 1875 and 1930 was triple distilled.

Products

Besides Littlemill and livestock manure passage and the peaty Dumbuck was temporarily made ​​here. These fillings are very popular collector's items.
