Liuwa-Plain-Nationalpark

The Liuwa wetlands lie north of Mongu in Zambia west on the Zambezi River between its tributaries Luanginga and Luambimba. The National Park Authority is in place Kalabo.

This National Park lives of the wildebeest and zebra migration of huge herds of Angola forth in the rainy season. Numerous species of antelope then come into the Liuwaaue, which is in full bloom. The floodplain consists of open grassland with trees, sandy bushland and watercourses far away from any civilization.

Tourism

From August to December, the Liuwaaue offers everything for Safari Friends. However, the National Park is really secluded and only for tourists who love the bush and wildlife. All-wheel drive is essential and the ride in at least two cars strongly recommended. The visit should be carried out under armed guide and not on your own.

There is no infrastructure for tourists, no camps, no lodges. But may all be camped. The journey itself is an adventure. For the 180 kilometers from Sesheke after Kalabo two days must be included because the roads are very sandy. There are no gas stations. Gasoline and provisions need to be taken for the entire tour. If the water level is high enough, the tourist in Mongu can take the mail boat after Kalabo. There he can hire a guide. Whether has a car, is another question. A tourist must have a very complete equipment, to visit this national park. There are quite walking tours offered and these organized tours are highly recommended, because the necessary logistics can not be guaranteed for individuals.
