Kalabo

Kalabo is a place and a District in the northwest of the Western Province of Zambia by the river Luanginga. It is the seat of the administration of the district of the same with 114 806 inhabitants ( 2000 census ).

Kalabo can only be reached on the river, on the land with sufficient water level only with all-wheel drive. The paths of Sesheke there are deep sand. The ferry across the Zambezi are not reliable. It is planned by the SADC road from Mongu to Angola. The entire area is sparsely populated and isolated until well into Angola.

Kalabo is the seat of the district and the national park administration of Liuwa Plains National Park. There is a 1,000 -meter-long airstrip, a river port, a regional market, a health center and schools. Since Kalabo is so difficult to achieve, the tourism can not develop in the Liuwa floodplains with their large herds of game.
