Llancarfan

Llancarfan is a country parish in the unitary authority Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales. The place is located west of Barry at Cowbridge and lies on the River The Nant.

The Saint Cadoc 's Church

The famous Saint Cadoc 's Church, named after an abbot of Llancarfan, in the 6th century the parish ( clas ) board. A clas was in contrast to monasteries usually consist of a single building, the church, monastery, convent school and household section united under one roof. The spacious building, which was subordinate to the Middle Ages the Benedictine Gloucester, has a baptismal font and the remains of a rood screen. This rood screen was converted into a reredos ( Reredos ). 2008 during restoration work under the white plaster a medieval wall painting was exposed, showing one of the three discovered in Wales pictures of Saint George.

Well-known residents

  • Caradoc of Llancarfan ( 12th century ), the author of a biography of Saint Gildas from the 12th century, was one of the prominent students of the monastery.
  • Edward Williams (1747 - 1826), under the name of Iolo Morgannwg a Welsh antiquarian, poet, author and manuscript collector who became known especially by some forgeries supposedly ancient literary works.
