Local border traffic

It is usually limited to a resident in specified border areas and persons subject to special restrictions on the carrying of goods and objects. Through bilateral agreements, the exact scope of border traffic is established. Under German law, are border crossings, which are approved only for local border traffic, as well as cross-border trails not designated as a border crossing.

Examples of local border traffic are German Empire and Austria (1933-1938), the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic, Austria and Yugoslavia and Slovenia (1953-1993), as well as Poland and the Czech Republic.

Middle border traffic between the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic

1972 Agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic was ratified. An additional protocol contained an " information of the GDR to facilitate travel ". The signed at Berlin on May 26, 1972 Treaty entered into force on 17 October 1972. Authorised travel was every inhabitant of the Federal Republic, in the cities and counties listed individually as " near the border " had his main residence. Could be visited again only the territories of the GDR as " near the border districts of the GDR (city and rural districts ) " were listed separately (see below), with certain location near the border municipalities and districts were excluded. There were annually 30 days stays, at most nine visiting days per quarter allowed. It could be visited both relatives and acquaintances, but also travel for purely touristic reasons were allowed. The entry had to basically take place at the transition, which was the closest Besuchsort. The entry visa issued at the border. The passport and the "multiple - qualification certificate", which had previously applied for four to six weeks were show off. Application forms for warrants was returned to the person at his local authority. Young people under 16 were allowed in principle to enter unless accompanied by an adult. For each day stay visa fee of 5.00 DM was due. In addition was a minimum conversion of 25.00 German marks in 25,00 Mark of the GDR ( booth 1980), which was not redeemable prescribed. It could be carried free of charge when leaving the only objects of 20,00 Mark of the GDR.

The departure had to be on the same calendar as the entry.

Bus shuttle

At the road crossing points for motor vehicles (except to the motorway junctions Gudow / Zarrentin, Helmstedt / Marie Born and Rudolph Stein / Hirschberg ), a shuttle bus was also on both sides of the border set. The buses of the transport companies from the Federal territory were allowed to go behind the respective border crossing point in the GDR only until the turn loop or service station. In the West German buses then the clearance has been made. Then drove from here the shuttles of the GDR on. The remaining route from the border crossing by taxi or pick up by relatives or acquaintances was also possible.
