Lodovico Altieri

Lodovico Altieri ( born July 17, 1805 in Rome, † August 11, 1867 in Albano ) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

Altieri received on 24 March 1833, the ordination. Appointed on July 11, 1836 Titular Archbishop of Ephesus, he was commissioned by Pope Gregory XVI. on 17 July 1836, the episcopal ordination. Altieri was 1836-1845 Apostolic Nuncio in Vienna.

He was in pectore by Pope Gregory XVI. created cardinal on 14 December 1840 which was published after his resignation as nuncio on April 21, 1845. He was cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Portico. In 1845 he was charged pro hac vice to cardinal priest of his title diakonia. He then became a member of the Roman Curia, first secretary since September 5, 1861 Prefect of the Congregation of the Index. On 17 December 1860 he became Cardinal Bishop of the Diocese of Albano suburbicarian. He participated in the conclave of 1846, Cardinal Giovanni Maria Mastai - the Ferretti chose the Pope. Pius IX. appointed him on 8 March 1863 Archpriest of the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano

He used the sick and dying during a cholera epidemic that had hit his bishopric of Albano and retired as the disease itself to where he eventually died.
