History

The location of today's stadium is used as a sports field since 1903. The first stadium -like facility was built in 1923 of concrete. At this time, the stadium took only 2,000 spectators. As of 1948, the stadium has been expanded several times.

The stadium is home to the South African Rugby Union teams in the Super Rugby Bulls and Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup. The two football clubs SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns use the Loftus Versfeld Stadium and the Atteridgeville Super Stadium each part-time. In addition, there also a few games in the Rugby Union World Cup 1995 took place.

Further, the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup was played in the stadium prior to the World Cup. 2010 were held here five games the first round and a second-round game of the World Cup.

In addition to sporting events concerts are held in the stadium also.

The name of the stadium goes back to Robert Owen Loftus Versfeld, who is considered the founder of organized sports in Pretoria.
